The Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance took place last weekend for the 46th time at Stanford University.

The weekend charity event kicked off with “The Drive” on Saturday. The open road drive
took in the beautiful coastal back roads of the San Francisco Peninsula and down the Pacific Coast highway for a memorable day out.

Altogether, nearly 400 automobiles made their way onto the Sand Hill Athletic Field at Stamford University. “A concours is a classy event,” Bill Downey, president of the Palo Alto Host Lions Club said, “and ours is getting a little classier!”

Over 10,000 visitors passed through the gates of the stadium to attend the concours event, Downey said, called it one of the premier events of its type in Northern California.

The American Marque of the main event was the Chrysler Corporation presenting: Desoto, Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler. The European Marque was the Fiat Corporation featuring Fiat, Maserati, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. Not to forget the special inclusion of Dodge Vipers with the Viper CLub of America displaying 20-years of Viper experience.

“It’s just a heck of a lot of eye candy,” he said. “A lot of these cars can be summed up by saying: ‘You’re going in style.’ ”

The concours is about more than just ogling and dreaming about beautiful cars, though. The Lions Club use this event to raise over $1.5 million for nonprofit organizations. Proceeds this year will benefit at least 40 South Bay charities, Downey said.
